Newtown is one of the lively suburbs in Sydney where there is no shortage of cafes to be found. Situated on O’Connell Street in the heart of Newtown is a cafe known as Brewtown Newtown. Brewtown Newtown is a cafe that opened sometime in 2013, and was a new venture undertaken by the owners of Gnome Espresso in Surry Hills.


It’s quickly become a popular brunch spot, known for its coffee and cronuts. E and I arrived here around 1:30pm on a Monday to have lunch. I was expecting it to be rather busy, and there were plenty of diners, but luckily there were also plenty of seats available. Brewtown Newtown was larger than I expected it to be, and featured a large, airy interior room with brick walls. The whole room gave off a trendy, industrial space vibe. The ambience was relaxing and it was the perfect place to catch up with a friend that I hadn’t seen in awhile.

We perused our menus at length. I was rather disappointed that the duck ravioli wasn’t available on the menu anymore, and opted for the Beetroot Cured Ocean Trout with Goat’s Cheese, Caper Berries and Baby Beets ($16.50) while E chose the Crispy Blue Eye Cod with Spinach, Chorizo and House Cut Chunky Chips ($17). From the time that we had been seated it had been a little difficult to get service from the waiters but it didn’t seem particularly crowded.


After we ordered, the food took about 15-20 minutes to arrive. The Beetroot Cured Ocean Trout was presented nicely with spinach, juicy pieces of beetroot, slivers of ocean trout, and goat’s cheese scattered throughout the dish. There was also a sweet brownish dressing that had been drizzled over everything. The ocean trout tasted fresh and was delicious when paired with the tangy goat’s cheese and juicy beetroot. Every element of this dish worked well together and my only disappointment was that there wasn’t more of it.


The Crispy Blue Eye Cod ($17) was crisped to perfection and garnished with rock salt and fresh parsley. It was served with thick cut potato chips. E and I agreed that the crispy blue eye cod had been cooked very well, remaining crisp on the outside, while soft on the inside. However, despite knowing that it was fish, it tasted undeniably like chicken, and we couldn’t stop thinking about this while eating it.

I found that it had been a bit difficult to get the attention of the waiters but the service was friendly and efficient once we did.

The prices at Brewtown Newtown were standard for a normal cafe. The servings were also average sized, and both E and I were happy with the portions that we had been served. We left satisfied with the food we had eaten, but still had enough room to eat more.

E and I both enjoyed our meals at Brewtown Newtown. It was pretty traditional cafe fare, consisting of an all-day breakfast menu featuring items such as Mini Egg Benedict Brioche Roll ($8.50), Belgian Waffles with Orange Ricotta ($15) and Bircher Muesli with Seasonal Fruit and Honey Yoghurt ($12), in conjunction with a lunch menu. Most of their menu items sound simple, traditional and wholesome, cooked well with fresh ingredients. All in all, I liked the food and would probably come back on another occasion to try more of Brewtown’s menu items, as well as their freshly baked cronuts, which I was sad to have missed out on as The Affogato Shack (located above Brewtown Newtown) is closed on Mondays.
